Best of the Underground 2015

Well boys and girls, the time has finally come to bust out your finest Tequila and wave goodbye to all the mistakes you made in 2015 as to make room for all the new mistakes you’ll make in 2016. We here at TMF would hate to send you out without some killer tunes to keep the festivities going so we’ve compiled the top 5 bands we covered in 2015. Here’s to you, here’s to one hell of a year, and here’s to the Underground!!

#1. PRONOSTIC

cover

Considering these cat’s were the last to get covered before everyone went on vacation, they made the biggest impact with our staff. Here’s what we had to say…

“Pronostic, have managed to fuse together both technical and progressive Death Metal attitudes with bone chilling tones and magnificent peaks and crevasses resulting in an album that will blood eagle your soul with its intensity, and then place a single rose at your feet as the vultures pick at your rotting carcass.”

Damn.. Maybe we got a little to descriptive with this one? You can check out the full review and check out the band using the links below.

#2. DECIMATUS

Coming in at an extremely close second was a band we covered on a guest spot for Metal Temple, Decimatus. It almost hurts putting these Aussie natives any less than second, but hey, this is why we get paid the big bucks, right?

“There is not one weak link in the chain with DECIMATUS. Power, groove, technique, stamina, and the ability to make this journalist smile for an entire album are just a few of the reasons, “Catalyst For Rage”, is my early front runner for album of the year. Now, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, give me the horns and get yourself back in that pit.”

#3. TORMENTER

FB_IMG_1437771462479

Thrash, Thrash, and just for good measure, some more Thrash. Would you expect anything less out of good ol’ California? This album was a re-realease but one worthy of takin our middle spot in the countdown. Here’s a little taste of why…

“Close your eyes and picture, if you will, Slayer and Exodus having a musical baby. Got it? GREAT! Now imagine Obituary and Ascendancy era Trivium have a musical child of their own. These two babies grow up together, they fall in love with one another, then during a night of sweat whips and passion, the condom breaks. The ensuing serial killer, i mean… baby, with its sweet guitar licks and unstoppable double bass would get you in the ballpark of the absolute madness that is Tormenter.”

Yeah… maybe we should cut back on the visual descriptors just a tad next year…

#4. DEADPOOL

Coming in fourth, we have probably one of the most highly debated bands that we cover this year. While yes, the name does bear a striking resemblance to an action hero, all the hooplah was over us crowning these guys the new Sepultura. Or maybe it was something about Max Cavalera… Find out for yourself.

“Chris Wolfe delivers a stellar performance using great timing, epic rolls, and down right nasty drum fills that Igor Cavalera himself would tip his hat at.”

#5. Gladius Sky

Finally, rounding out the TOP 5 of 2015 is the brain child of one incredible musical mind. We were taken back by covering the one man project, but then we pressed play and, well, just read this…

“The track compositions were laid out by Revak but Hannes took the design and delivered kickboxer power with ballerina grace. What you will hear truly is beauty in aggression, and power in structure.”

Pronostic Hit The Red Button with “An Atomic Decision”

The power of the riff has long been understood and respected in the metal community. It can send you into an all out blitz or pull you into a groove abyss the likes of which you may never escape. It seems nowadays however, that band after band are constantly falling into the trap of putting on artistic blinders in an effort to reach some new level of heaviness and creativity and originality seem to have been abandoned all together while us fans are left to wade through the ashes of what could have been. Generic carbon copy garbage may be the new norm but a handful of bands do remain that put actual effort and originality into their work and we’ve sifted through the mud to bring you Montreal‘s own Pronostic and their debut full length album, “An Atomic Decision“.

From it’s haunting beginning to its destructive end, this kick to the teeth is absolutely plastered with virtuoso composition and stellar musicianship. Pronostic, have managed to fuse together both technical and progressive Death Metal attitudes with bone chilling tones and magnificent peaks and crevasses resulting in an album that will blood eagle your soul with its intensity, and then place a single rose at your feet as the vultures pick at your rotting carcass.

All immaculate visual descriptors aside, with all the negative events of late this album could not have come at a better time and I for one have a new front runner for Underground Album Of The Year. Check it out for yourselves below.

Attack On Paris: An Act Of Cowardice

After taking some time to fully digest the attacks on Paris, France that occurred on Friday November the 13th, I have decided to release my thoughts. The following is an open letter to the people of France, the music community, the World, and ISIS.

Let me begin by paying my respects to the people of France and those that lost their lives in Friday’s senseless attacks. You have suffered a true tragedy and my words will never reflect how powerfully and completely my heart goes out to you all, nor will it take away any of the pain and sorrow I imagine you are feeling at this time. I, along with the rest of the world, watched in horror as the events unfolded in complete astonishment and disbelief. While in the aftermath I may not be able to lessen your pain, I offer you my hand, my love, and my boots on the ground should such a day come as you require them. I am eternally sorry.

To the musical community as a whole and the fans attending the Eagles of Death Metal show at the Bataclan on that tragic night I offer this:

Music is and has always been therapy to us. It is a release and an escape from the cold realities of the outside world. Those attending the show expected nothing more than exactly that and instead they were ambushed by cowards wielding assault rifles and suicide vests, ready to kill and die for something as trivial an interpretation of words scribbled down in a book thousands of years ago. Those we’ve lost will always be missed and the memories of these events will never fade. However, in the wake of all the atrocities, something beautiful has come about that I for one have never seen before. The typical genre bashing, the elitism, the style VS style and genre VS genre, the vile words and pointless arguments that litter online forums and pit fan against fan have ceased and in its place a sense of community and brotherhood has risen. To music fans of any genre in any country, thank you for this.

To the World:

When Paris went dark, we turned on our lights to show her that we were there. We overlaid our profile pictures with the French flag and held a moment of silence at all major sporting events to honor France and show our solidarity. These acts do in fact show our support and make us feel as though we have done some good on that day, but what tangible benefit does this have for the victims and future victims? Does that profile picture console a grieving mother that just lost her child? Does your moment of silence fall upon the ears of the child that lost their parent and assure them that things will be okay and that we will never allow this to happen again? The world grieved and fell silent on 9/11 and yet acts just like it are continuing over 14 years later. Your showings of empathy are beautiful and reflect the worlds sense of humanity, but the world needs to stand together as one with action to change this culture of hate. For Islamic, Christian, Catholic, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Atheist, Scientologist, Agnostic, Black, White, Brown, Red, Yellow, Purple, Silver, Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Bi, Transgender, Gender Neutral, Socialist, Communist, Capitalist, Republican, Democrat, Liberal, Conservative, Men, Women, Children, Foreign, Domestic, and Alien people all over this planet, we must stand together not for personal gain nor revenge, but for a future of peace by way of tangible actions today.

Finally, to ISIS:

2015-11-18 15.40.22

I want you to carefully read over everything you have just read and reassure yourselves of the lack of two very key words throughout this entire letter: Terror & Fear. Your mission was to commit a terrorist attack on the the people of France and in turn, the World. In absolutely beautiful fashion, you have failed miserably. The people of France are not terrified and in fact are now stronger and more profoundly bounded as a people than they were before. During the attack, the people of Paris opened their doors to complete strangers out of love and compassion instead of locking them shut from fear and terror. The police starred death in the face and their courage never faltered as they struck down the mangy dogs you sent after their countrymen. Now, instead of sending the world hiding from your hate, you have united a world and made its people stronger and more determined than ever to eradicate the hate that fills your hearts. This was not an act of terrorism. This was an act of cowardice by a group of people terrified themselves of a people and a culture different from themselves. With each threat we shall grow stronger, for you are but a few cowards and we are many with hearts filled with overflowing love.

Danzig Has Fan Severely Beaten

image

Most of us in the Metal community are aware of the dangers we are going to face when going to a show. Even outside of the pits, things can happen that would cause some degree of harm. None of us, however, expect to be brought on stage to face that danger. Unfortunately for Ireland native, Neil Dalton, that’s exactly what happened to him at last night’s Danzig show at The Metropolis in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

image

Reportedly, Mr. Dalton ignored the band’s stiff warning prohibiting any video, audio, or pictures being taken at any of his shows during his current tour. (In all honestly, we here at That Metal Fan can’t blame him for trying though, after all, he did fly from Ireland and spend $100 on tickets just to attend the show.) Upon being seen taking a picture of Glenn Danzig, the lead singer for Danzig, Mr. Dalton was brought on stage where he claims to have been tells by security and then beaten. As if the injuries weren’t enough, Mr. Danzig decided to add some insult by throwing in a punch himself. Below is a picture of the bloody aftermath.

image

Regardless of Glenn Danzig’s violent tendencies towards just about everyone, as proven by several accounts and video, Montreal police have reportedly not pressed charges stating that as there was no video evidence, (go figure), there is no proof.

Serial Date Rapist In Brisbane Metal Scene?

The power of close knit metal communities never ceases to amaze me. Chances are, at one time or another you too have witnessed this for yourself. Whether it be a promoter giving a band the shaft and needing to be blackballed or a member of our metal family coming into some hardship and needing a lending hand, the metal world has a special and unique way of coming together and getting done those things that need to get done. It is this same efficiency and strength in metal brotherhood that the Brisbane, Queensland, Australia scenes have demonstrated following a reportedly horrific incident occurring during a show at The Back Room at Chardons Corner Hotel on August 7th 2015. In spite of the efforts of the local scene in Brisbane, not enough has been done to uncover the name of the alleged culprit and that is why we here at TMF call on each and every one of you to help spread the word on this incident in an effort to gain some answers and justice, as well as raise awareness in the metal community about the heinous and atrocious acts of the low life’s that walk this earth. The following is a description of the events said to have taken place on the night in question.

Flyer for the show where the events were said to have occurred.
Flyer for the show where the events were said to have occurred.

Allegedly, sometime during the show, a young woman by the name  [Name withheld per the victims request] had an unknown drug slipped into her drink which caused her to lose consciousness as well as vomit multiple times, which was likely her body trying to expel the drug. If not for a few good Samaritans noticing her distress and coming to her aid, later calling the ambulances that took the victim to a local hospital, we very well might have been writing a memorial for her instead of this call to action.

The Back Room @ Chardons Corner Hotel

We are very happy to report that the victim has been released and is currently getting well at her home at this time, however, the story took a strange turn on the day following the incident when she received a Facebook message regarding the events that had taken place.

Screenshot_2015-08-08-17-37-13-1

The above picture shows a screenshot taken by the victim of the messaged she received from a Chloe Jane Bartoli. In her message, Ms. Bartoli states that she in fact knows the person responsible for her drink being “spiked” and it wasn’t the first time the accused had committed the illegal act. Ms. Bartoli goes on to say that she unfortunately cannot divulge the name of the accused as it would be too damaging to his musical reputation in the local music community.

Rumors have surfaced that Ms. Bartoli used a fake profile to send her message to the victim. While this cannot be confirmed or disputed at this time, it is clear that the profile used to send the message has been deactivated and cannot be located.

Whether a Serial Date Rapist is on the loose in the Brisbane metal scene or rather this was a one off event that unfortunately took place, it should spark outrage from the metal communities across the globe. This is an act that can take place in any scene at any time and we as Metalheads need to stand together in an effort to raise awareness, get the word out, and let the scumbags that creep in the shadows that this kind of action will not be tolerated.

If you have any information regarding this case you are urged to contact the Brisbane police immediately. Share this story with your friends, your families, and your brothers and sisters in the metal community. Together we can get justice for this and all other victims and tell the world #notmyscene

Learn To Slaughter With Corpse Hoarder

The stench of rotting flesh fills my nostrils as I take a bit of entrails from my blood stained teeth. Ecstasy in itself falls short as a just description for the full and flush electricity running through my skin. From your scalp to your kneecaps, the cornucopia of body parts strewn about the forest floor serves as a reminder of the massacre that had just taken place here. It was a night I shall never forget. The night I first heard Corpse Hoarder. The night I became a homicidal maniac.

image

While I may not have literally ripped apart a body piece by piece, this Philadelphia based Brutal Death Metal four piece had me feeling as though I had actively and willingly joined them in the slaughter of an innocent. From their sound to their imagery, everything about Corpse Hoarder works in unison to create pure putrid perfection. Classic scooped out guitars maintain a constant toxic viscosity suited wonderfully for the three available tracks, though nothing necessarily fancy shines through. But then again, Jason Voorhees never uttered a single word and massacred the masses for decades.

image

I never believed vocals to be all that important in BDM honestly. (Almost) Everything I have heard follows a formulaic mediocrity that leads to a, “how low can you go” feel and at the end of the day, you feel lucky to walk away understanding two words on the entire album. Corpse Hoarder vocalist Scruffo, (No really, look it up.), challenges this by going the extra mile and being audible while belting out intense tones. He’s essentially the creepy mortician warning you of the consequences of playing with demons only to put the demon back in it’s cage once it’s done devouring your soul.

image

What pushes Corpse Hoarder over the top for me is their Bass/Drum combo. Myke (Bass) berates the ever living hell out of your eardrums and it works dangerously well with Armen‘s tactical drum assault on an effort to have you bleeding out of orifices you didn’t even know you had. It’s this final one two punch that really seals everything together and ensures that at least one person in the crowd is going to be soiling themselves from fear.

image

If you have had a recent urge to pick up that kitchen knife and hockey mask, DO NOT listen to Corpse Hoarder. Frankly, the world has enough evil to deal with already. If you’re a sabre person that looks to constantly push the limits, then listen once. But only one. After that, TMF can’t ensure your safety and your soul may be lost to the depths of hell forever. Good luck!!

Technical Death Metal from “Day One”

I can count the number of Technical Death Metal shows that I have attended on one hand. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Death Metal. However, when you through in those impossible to follow breakdowns and play at tempos/beats that require a high powered calculator in order to understand what the hell it is you’re listening to, I tend to lose interest. I dreaded having to stumble into 3rd period and I’m not trying to suffer flashbacks every time I plug in as a means to relax. It’s just not my thing. With that being said, you can imagine the look of udder bewilderment on my face when I came across some Tech-Death that not only slays every sacrificial virgin withing a fifty mile radius of my speakers, but also makes sense as well.

Screenshot_2015-08-03-12-27-45-1

Day One is a four piece coming from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. How the hell they manage to pull off the tenacious and impeccable sound they do is a question that will most likely be answered right after scientist find out definitively whether or not we are alone in the universe. Guitarist Jay Nerada is an absolute master of his craft and it is clear that the music is structured around his madman approach to composition. Following closely behind him in skill level is Marty Leibel on drums. Matching the sonic perfection of Jay every step of the way is not easy but with his constantly running legs he pulls it off wonderfully and with grace. While musically Day One take the Tech-Death cake, the real Picasso here is vocalist, Cayle Charlton. This genre has a tendency to favor low frequency vocals that make enjoyment and understanding some sort of luxury and with Cayle, its the complete opposite. Not only can you understand word for word what is being said without the need of a lyric video, the guy has one of the greatest screams I or anyone else here at TMF has heard in some time. With him wielding the mic, Day One have quickly molded themselves into the Canadian version of Arch Enemy.

2015-08-03 12.31.12

If epic sonic journey’s are your thing, if you want to be looking at the show in front of you instead of the calculator in your hand, and you want it all with slit your throat animosity, Day One has you covered.
